One day you’ll find yourself ordering wine. The first thing to know is that old world wines, i.e. European, are usually identified by region, e.g. Bordeaux, whereas new world wines are usually identified by grape, e.g. Cabernet Sauvignon. Until you learn the region or grape you like, ask your waiter for a recommendation, and don’t be shy about specifying a price range.
Extra Points
If you feel you’ve been served a bad bottle of wine but are unsure, ask the waiter to taste it as well. Note, you can send back an open bottle if it’s “corked,” i.e. faulty packaging has allowed the wine to go bad, but not because you don’t like the wine you selected and want to try something else.
